an angels guide: healthy eating at school


hi angels! you voted and this came first so here it is, an angels guide to eating healthily and focusing on your body and health goals at school. healthy eating at school can be tricky. you use up so much enegry and time in class and studying that meals can seem a little less important. you might end up skipping a meal or eating a meal that ends up not fitting your health goals all because you ran out of time. i have created three categories of lunches to help you find meal inspo: cold lunches, hot lunches and make the night before lunches. also a bonus snack section and some general tips! enjoy angels and feel free to comment your go to lunches/snacks.

tips
bring a bottle of cold water with you to school, drinking water regularly helps you look and feel your best.
eat breakfast! even if you don’t get very hungry eating in the morning helps your brain and body function it’s best. try having some fruit or a smoothie if you really struggle to eat in the mornings.
try vitamins/probiotics to help you get all your nutrients and vitamins in.
buy a cute lunch box/food containers to make sure your lunches are adorable.
make a pinterest board of cute healthy lunches to be inspired by!
figure out your health goals and create meal ideas from there. for example: i want to build muscle! that means you need more protein in your diet so plan meals and snacks with lots of protein sources to fit your goal.

a week of cold lunches:
chicken salad: mix chicken, avocado, tomato, cucumber, carrot, corn, salad leaves (lettuce, rocket etc). add mustard and lemon dressing, season well with salt and pepper and fresh dill. dessert: raspberries and blueberries served with peanut butter and greek yogurt.
tuna and avocado pita: mashed avocado and tuna, seasoned with salt and pepper, fill in pita along with rocket and pickle slices. dessert: pineapple and pomegranate fruit salad.
cold rice bowl: mix cooked salmon, rice, cucumbers, cooked broccoli and sliced carrot. sprinkle with sesame seeds and pepper and salt. garnish with a garlic mayo or homemade yogurt garlic sauce. dessert: chopped strawberries dipped in yogurt and coated in dark chocolate and coconut oil left to harden.
feta and turkey wrap: place lettuce, turkey, tomato in a wrap and sprinkle with feta, pepper and salt. dessert: sliced apple (squeeze lemon over to stop apple going brown) with peanut butter, greek yogurt and cinnamon dip.
cold pesto pasta salad: mix cooked penne pasta, homemade pesto, tomato, rocket, avocado, grated parmesan and season with salt and pepper. dessert: tangerine pieces and kiwi.
cold noodles: mix cooked noodles, shredded red cabbage and carrots, green onions, handful of crushed peanuts, chopped cucumber and cover with sesame peanut sauce. dessert: homemade blueberry banana oat muffin.
salmon bagel: add salmon, cream cheese (or cottage cheese), cucumber, rocket, lemon and pepper to a bagel. dessert: blackberries and mango.

a week of hot lunches:
pizza toast: spread homemade tomato sauce on a piece of sourdough bread, cover with mozzarella, add your favourite toppings such as ham, mushroom, olive, pepper etc and bake until cheese melted, serve with rocket. dessert: banana bread and greek yogurt.
stuffed aubergine (or eggplant): sauté aubergine, onion, garlic, pepper, zucchini and olive, add in tomato paste and season. put in aubergine and sprinkle with cheese. bake until cheese melted. dessert: sautéed apples served warm with yogurt and granola.
chicken meatballs: homemade chicken meatballs cooked with a soy based sauce and red peppers. serve with cooked rice. dessert: strawberry oat crumble.
gyozas: heat or make some gyozas and serve with a cucumber and carrot salad with soy sauce to dip. dessert: hot matcha tea with strawberries.
soup: make your favourite soup and serve with some warm sourdough toast. dessert: watermelon slices.
quesadilla style wrap: fill a whole wheat wrap with cheese, turkey, tomatoes and avocado. cook until cheese melted and warm. dessert: green grapes, blueberries and raspberries.
grilled chicken burrito bowl: mix grilled chicken, rice, avocado, black beans, corn, tomatoes, red onions, cilantro and sour cream with cooked rice and squeeze over lime and season as preferred. dessert: rice cakes with greek yogurt strawberries and melted dark chocolate.

Why do I care? Well because food production in a post-apocalyptic world where the planets have been stripped of their thalergy is a contentious issue. I'm astonished that they have chocolate, and that the Fifth (at least) has dairy. Palamedes says 'my whole House for a reliable food source' and the level of physical weakness amongst both necromancers and cavaliers (as evidenced in As Yet Unsent by Judith's assessment of 5K times for top necro and cav Cohort recruits) suggests that it's not just thalergy depletion but malnutrition that might pose an issue to the Houses. And yet...chocolate? Lemons? Red meat? What are they eating on these installations? Where are they farming not just food (which could be hydroponically grown) but livestock?
I have no answers I just think it's very interesting what does and doesn't get mentioned

10 Ace Attorney fics that made me >LOL<
(part 1)
Reading AA fanfics on Ao3 has been my 'go to' choice for self-care this past year. The following are works that literally made me either snort, giggle, cackle or laugh out loud. As usual, these are in no particular order, because creating a sense of order in life is an illusion, and fics are to be enjoyed and celebrated, not ranked ;p
1. Vocal Exercises by SapphireWine
Rating: G Words: 4,756 Read time: 20 mins
Phoenix has a secret talent!! I laughed out loud so hard at this story's climax, I think I hurt myself (the best kind of hurt ;) ). And like so many of SapphireWine's fics, the story is so sweet (new love getting to know each other) and crisp (that snappy dialogue!) and savory (mmmmm tasty Narumitsu). I wrote in my bookmark that this fic is a sweet little ol’ onion if onions were like apples maybe, and covered in feelings.

2. Eureka Moment by Kantayra

"Miles discovers that, to his embarrassment, he is just as much of a total dork in bed as he is in everything else." Ahem, ngl, this is now firmly established in my head canon. Kantayra is one of my 'go to' Narumitsu Master authors. They specialize in short, sharp and hilarious ficlets, and I highly recommend all their work. This author will show up again in my fic recs, guaranteed.

"Miles prided himself on his self-control, or at least he would if only Phoenix would stop being so incurably Phoenix." OOP! See! I was (w)right, here is another one by Kantayra. In addition to being a Narumitsu Master, they are a freaking Pun Master! OMG the PUNS!!!! And the fact these are Mile’s weakness! I am so dang happy I found this author and this fic in particular. I'm laughing even as I'm typing this, remembering some of them.

And sorry, I can't help but slip in yet another gem by Kantayra! (Honestly, I might have to do a dedicated post on them in the future). "How Edgeworth applies for a job: smugly, confidently, remorselessly, and with plenty of snark." In the form of a heavily cited resume, this is another absolutely fantastic ‘pun fic’ from this fabulous creator.

Our favourite idiots being, well, idiots. By yes, another one of the authors I consider a 'Narumitsu Master.' In the author's notes, they say "I intended this to be Really Soft and it turned out Really Stupid" I happen to love soft and stupid so there we go... but it also has heart, so there we go twice.

How to follow a Mediterranean Greek diet
The Mediterranean diet naturally expands throughout the coastal countries of South Europe, North Africa and the Middle East but there are some small differences between their cuisines. So here I am writing specifically about the Greek version of the Mediterranean diet, known for its delicious, natural flavours and its significant health benefits.

Eat daily:
Olive oil: the pillar, the liquid green gold of the Mediterranean Greek diet. Olive oil should be used ideally exclusively for all purposes. It's dressing salads, it's used in cooking and in fact it's traditionally what is used in frying too. Replace all types of oils, butter and margarine with olive oil even when making pastries. The only problem here is that outside of the Mediterranean basin olive oil can be pricey, however that's the foundation the diet is based on. If you are interested in following the traditional Greek diet for taste or health purposes, it is good to really incorporate olive oil in your daily cooking. If it’s not possible to afford buying olive oil all the time (although you could balance it out by not buying other oils and butter), a non-Greek-typical but equivalent alternative could be avocado oil. However, I doubt avocado oil or any other oil can remotely compare to olive oil in health properties, taste or in any other positive quality 🫒
Vinegar: Just like olive oil, vinegar is a very important ingredient and is also used in natural remedies However, it can hurt a sensitive GI tract if consumed in large portions. A little bit of it added to meals frequently is very healthy. Apple cider vinegar is also very loved and used in salads often 🍇
Vegetables: no portion can be too much (wild greens, garlic, onions, cauliflowers, cucumbers, eggplants, beets, peppers, spinach, artichokes, zucchini, peas, lettuce, the list never ends). Tomatoes and broccoli are recent additions to the Greek diet however they were integrated perfectly to the Greek cuisine. In general, all vegetables can be enjoyed freely with some moderation in the potatoes, especially when fried 🥗
Fruits: grapes, berries, apples, melons, cherries, figs, prunes, sour cherries, peaches, pomegranates are the most historically loved fruits in the Greek diet. Since the middle ages citruses like the orange, the lemon and the mandarin are more and more loved. Greeks nowadays use lemon almost more than vinegar and both have become integral components of the Greek diet. Obviously, tropical fruits like, say, banana, mango, grapefruit are not present in the traditional Greek diet, however all fruits are good fruits and you can enjoy them freely 🍎
Legumes. Eat freely to the tolerance of your body. Legumes can be too heavy for some GI tracts. Legumes are a great source of protein and fibre. Choose brown lentils, white beans, fava beans, chickpeas, giant beans and black eyed peas the most 🫘
Nuts, seeds: almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, peanuts etc. Eat as much as your body can take, because everybody is different 🥜
Mushrooms: mushroom it up! A great healthy way to have them is grilled with herbs and plain or apple cider vinegar dressing 🍄🟫
Whole grains: this is the traditional way to eat grains. Brown bread, oats, whole wheat pasta 🌾
Fish and seafood: find and eat them fresh. Instead of buying them deep frozen from the big markets, find local fish stores if your place is coastal and has them. Eat both large but especially small and medium sized fish. Some fish like salmon and tuna should ideally not be consumed daily due to their high levels of mercury and fats 🐟🎣🍤
Herbs and spices. Feel free to use as much as you want however if you are interested also in the flavours of the Greek diet besides the health benefits, a tip is that Greek dishes do not contain extremely hot spices 🌿
Water: A lot of water daily and, mind you, plain clear mineral water. No flavoured water, definitely not sparkling water and ideally no other liquids in place of the water. I mean, sure you can have liquids but you should ALSO have plain water 💧
Eat a few times per week:
Poultry: Poultry and lean meats entered the Greek cuisine mostly after the Middle Ages however they are nowadays enjoyed as part of the Greek Mediterranean diet because they are tasty and healthier than other types of meat. Chicken has become especially popular in the Greek cuisine. Other birds are the pheasant, the quail, the turkey and more sparsely the duck 🍗
Eggs: eggs are healthy and should be consumed a few times per week but not daily because they can cause a rise in cholesterol levels 🥚
Dairy: Greeks LOVE dairy products, especially the various types of cheese, however they are often irritating to the GI tract and they are linked with rises in the level of inflammation in the body. This is why you should ideally limit them to a few times per week. One exception is the yoghurt, which is fermented and can be perhaps consumed more frequently due to its beneficial properties. Important note: if you want to follow the Greek diet, you should ideally opt for milk and other dairy products from goats and sheep! Cow milk is not traditionally used in the Greek cuisine often and sheep and goat milk are significantly healthier and more nutritious. The only drawback is the stronger smell, however if you can get past that, it is strongly advised to switch to those instead of cow milk. Another note: what is known as “Greek yoghurt” in western countries is not in fact a true Greek yoghurt. What you call Greek yoghurt is to us simply a strained yoghurt, a yoghurt from which the whey has been removed. Sometimes in western markets (and in Greek “modern” dessert yoghurt products) butterfat and powdermilk is added to them and they are mostly made of cow’s milk. Again, a traditional Greek yoghurt is made of sheep, goat milk or a mix of both and is unstrained. It also has a trademark thickened skin on its top (dunno if this is the actual term lol) which is in fact the part of the yoghurt that contains the most nutrients and personally it’s the tastiest part of the yoghurt but apparently it is not for everyone. As an example, a study showed that an unstrained sheep yoghurt has more protein, more omega-3 fatty acids and minerals yet fewer calories and fats than a strained cow yoghurt 🍦🧀
Wine: in small portions, like a small glass up to a few times per week and always in combination with your meal. You don’t drink it to get hammered, you drink it for the health benefits it has in very moderate quantities and for the reasonable mild euphoria it causes before it becomes harmful. The GI tract is linked to the brain and is detrimentally influenced by negative emotions. This is why it is important to try to be in a good mood, relaxed and peaceful when you sit down to eat. A sip of wine now and then can be good for that 🍷
Eat once per week or ideally less:
Red meat like pork or beef. In fact, beef should be the one most avoided not only because it is indeed the rarest of the common meats used in traditional Greek cuisine but also because you can’t separate the fat from the meat as easily as with pork. To follow the Greek style in a healthy way opt for goat, then lamb or pork and make beef your most occasional meat dish 🥩
Processed meats should be eaten rarely. If you are in a mood for it though, opt for Greek style sausages with herbs in or bacon at most. Cured meats like ham are better to be avoided but turkey is the healthiest of them. They are not a part of a traditional Greek cuisine though.
Refined grains can be enjoyed weekly but should not replace whole grains
Pastries. What’s new, pastries are not ideal for health. However, if you are yearning for something sweet, if you want to keep it healthy as much as possible in the “Greek way”, opt for desserts made of healthy ingredients like honey, nuts, olive oil and fruits. Chocolate came to Greece in the 19th century, however it has become an integral part of confectionery since then. Opt ideally for dark chocolate, combined with nuts or fruits such as oranges and prunes. Greeks especially love chocolate combined with nuts.
Soft and sugary drinks. Avoid them overall, especially the processed products in the markets. If you need a sweet drink really bad, you can keep it traditional by making your own sweet lemonade, sour cherry, pomegranate etc drink at home. You could also enjoy small quantities of lemon or mastic liquors which are good for digestion.
BONUS TIPS & PHILOSOPHY:
Try to find mastic if it’s available where you live. The mastic is a resin produced from the mastic tree, a species endemic to the Greek island of Chios and a small part of the opposite coast of Turkey. It has numerous beneficial properties, especially for digestion and gut health, and it combines them with a very pleasant fresh and sweet flavour. You can find it in gums that boost digestion, in drinks, in pastries and even in non-edible products like toothpastes. Learn about it and give it a try, no matter if you are interested in following Greek diet or not.
Greek cuisine does not go berserk on as many ingredients as possible (however Greeks typically add more ingredients than, say, Italians and perhaps fewer than the Middle Easterners). Don’t worry about adding as many foods and nutrients in one single dish. The most important thing in Greek cuisine philosophy is to pick the finest ingredients. Avoid deep frozen or precooked and processed ingredients. Pick whole fruits and vegetables from your local small grocery store. For example, don’t buy a watermelon slice in a zelatin bag from the supermarket. Take the whole freaking watermelon home. You heard me right. It’s heavy, yes, but you would be surprised how much tastier and healthier it is this way. Go to the butcher for meat. Go to the specific cheese shop for cheese. Go to the fisherman for fish and seafood. Go to the pastry shop and get a nice dessert instead of buying candies from the market.
Remember that in moderation you can eat most of the foods you desire, especially if they are not processed foods. There is nothing about the Greek diet that is restrictive in terms of its philosophy - historically the intake of various foods was regulated only based on availability and price. There are no foods you should limit due to any perception of them being “bad” and you should never feel guilty the moment you are actually having the food. Just work slowly and progressively by building gradual appreciation for healthy foods and prize less nutritious foods as occasional taste bud rewards.
As said above, a good mood is crucial when you sit down to eat. In the history of the Greek society this translated into eating with friends and / or family, maybe with the occasional sip of wine, ideally in a pleasant environment and always taking your time with your food. If some of these are less feasible than others, try alternatively to improve the setting in which you eat, to eat in an environment that calms you down. Schedule your meal so that you won’t eat in anxiety or hurry, if this is possible. Think of pleasant memories and feel grateful for your food. Cheers! Or, you know, εις υγείαν!

Why I Write Future Trunks with an Eating Condition
As a fanfiction writer, I typically stay very close to a character's original traits and personality when I write about them, whether this is regular writing or yumeship writing. Most people have their own headcanons and what not about Future Trunks but the main difference between my Future Trunks and your Future Trunks is that I write him with an eating condition.
Now let me be clear, this is an eating condition not an eating disorder. Or basically its Disordered Eating vs Eating Disorder.
An eating disorder is a clinical diagnosis that often is accompanied by obsessive thoughts about food, weight gain, and binging and purging. Disordered Eating however, is defined as "abnormal eating patterns" that do not meet the criteria for an eating disorder. The main difference is the symptoms themselves and how often and how intense they are. People with disordered eating sometimes can't control their symptoms either, so instead of choosing to not keep food down, their body reacts and they cannot keep food down, but not by choice.
So now that we got that cleared up, I write Future Trunks with an eating condition, or disordered eating patterns, and this is all based off multiple official Dragonball media sources. I will go into detail below the line break!


Saiyans are known widely for the ridiculous amounts of food they consume, everyone knows that about them right? Our first discrepancy is in DB Kai when everyone comes out the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Goku and Teen Gohan began eating, and essentially he is amazed at seeing how much food they can eat without stopping. I believe there is a scene of him and Vegeta eating before as well, when Bulma gave them the saiyan armor. Trunks is a half breed exactly like Gohan and even Goten for this matter, so why is he unable to eat like the rest of them? It's their genetic DNA, its in them as saiyans and yet he does not show this behavior.
This leads me to my second media, Kakarot for the PS4/PS5. Of course as a Trunks fangirl/yumeshipper I spent a lot of the game and post game playing with him as my party leader. Every character in the party has specific dialogue for overworld actions like running into battles and speaking to other people. Goku for example, when he finds a golden fruit says "this looks like a delicious apple/peach/etc!" or when he catches premium meat he's like "we're eating good tonight! Can't wait to get this home to ChiChi". Now, flying around as Future Trunks and collecting food items, leads to an interesting dialogue if the food is any type of premium find whether it is fruit, vegetable, or meat (sorry I lost my video proof when I transferred over to PS5)
Future Trunks: I am very grateful for the opportunity of such a rare find.
....This isn't money or gems we're talking about. This is an apple. A peach. A rare onion. Heck even Golden Deer meat. And that's his response. So clearly, food, especially good food is a luxury in Future Trunks timeline, which makes sense, his world has been devastated and rebuilt more than once due to multiple villains. By the time West City is getting back on its feet in the future, another monstority is coming to tear it down. So good food is probably not an option. It's all about survival at that point.
And this leads to our third example which is the media in DBS which collaborates my theory. In the Goku Black Arc, they've been at war for a year. Trunks is noticeably smaller in body mass when we see him for the first time compared to Kai, and even the movies like Bojack Unbound. The first scene we see is Future Trunks in his refugee home, he feeds Scratch and then he opens a very small can of food and takes a few bites before giving it to Mai. The amount of food in the can is not enough to even feed a child, more a less a saiyan. My assumption is that as humans, our bodies are made to adapt so at some point his body probably got used to such a low intake of food so he could keep fighting. And knowing all this, the first thing he does is give it to Mai. It's obvious food and resources are scarce for the survivors at this point since everything has been destroyed.



Future Trunks then arrives in the past and is immediately taken care of by the others. Of course he has to stay in the past as they devise a plan, but it is shown to be a struggle even then as he has vivid PTSD episodes when he tries to sleep and spends his time training.


Our first eating scene in the Past (not including the senzu bean he was fed) is when Bulma gives Beerus the Fish Sausage to please him and to forgive Trunks for time travelling. Beerus, Whis, and everyone else immediately eats the Fish Sausage and Trunks is shown to be the last one to bite into it. Even then, everyone finishes the sausage but Trunks does not. He's never shown to finish eating it. If anything he seemed a bit hesitant over Beerus and the food itself which is understandable.

When Trunks meets Current Gohan after his studies Gohan brings him ice cream and the first thing Future Trunks does is say "I'm good" as in he doesn't want it. But Gohan keeps talking and begins to apologize so he ends up taking the chocolate ice cream. Gohan takes bites out of the ice cream (dang my teeth hurt) but Trunks takes very very small licks of ice cream, eating in a conservative manner almost or that eating when you don't really want to eat. He only starts eating in bites when Gohan tells him to eat up before it melts, to which he does.


The next time we see him eating is after he gets his change of clean clothes from Bulma. Beerus, Whis, and Goku are discussing who Goku Black's energy feels like. Trunks has a plate similar to his usual exact same size and immediately he joins the conversation leaving the food clearly half eaten/barely touched in the background. He never goes back to eat it either, his whole focus becomes on Goku Black. However at this point Goku has already finished his plate (of many probably) and is still eating even when they discuss the plan about Goku Black's true identity and he steals Beerus' food lol.


After escaping back to the past once again, they have dinner at Capsule Corporation with all the Z fighters. Everyone is eating at the table except Future Trunks who already has less food compared to Goku and Vegeta. Even though the plates are small we can rightfully assume they went back multiple times. Future Trunks does not start eating until he realizes he is being watched; Goku points out that he's not eating and Current Trunks of the Past is sitting next to him and watching him. Vegeta is noticeably watching him too probably for a number of reasons though. It is only then that he starts eating and consequently he starts, shoving food into his mouth as if to fit in with the others.


Lastly we have the scene where Vegeta uses the capsule to open a buffet of food for the underground refugees when they return to the future. It's a really large spread of food with enough to go around for everyone. All the refugees thank Vegeta and began eating; noticeably Trunks does not partake of this meal at all, despite there being more than enough for everyone. It could be plausible that maybe he just wasn't hungry at the moment but its hard to resist good food isn't it? Especially if it's laid out in front of you. But the feeling is different if you don't have a healthy relationship with food.
All in all, analyzing these scenes are the reason why I've concluded Future Trunks does not have a healthy relationship with food and his behavior shows signs of disordered eating.
He has all the markings and stresses that rightfully adds up to that too, look at everything he's been through. He needs to eat more food, he's an adult saiyan, and the opportunity in the past allowed him to do so and he still choose not to. Maybe it wasn't a choice, maybe he physically couldn't eat more, even if he wanted too.
Now this isn't in any media obviously but disordered eating comes alongside changes in BMI, nausea, exhaustion, a feeling of fullness, skipping meals, a form of purging, etc. So I often write him with these symptoms after a meal because it's apart of disordered eating (or having an eating condition).
Probably once the emotional stressors are relieved and his timeline is saved, Future Trunks can start to work on his relationship with food and make it more healthy. Which I also like to focus on.
Anyway thanks for coming to my TED talk about Future Trunks relationship with food. Anytime I see him eating whether its fanart or official media it adds 5 years onto my lifespan.
Also once again this is my personal findings, everyone has different interpretations and this is just mine! I like this angle because it works out because it teaches that not all battles can be fought with fists you know?

I COULD MURDER A CURRY... Well, at least commit a certain amount of violence on one.
In other words, I wanted something curry-ish the other day without taking much trouble over it, so I threw this together from what was in the cupboard, fridge and freezer.
(There was rather less than I expected. That's been fixed.)
When I discovered we had no lamb or chicken it ended up as unintended vegetarian, and can as easily become vegan; just leave out the ghee. If my result is anything to go by, all variations will taste great.
NB #1, there's no salt; the preserved lemon has plenty.
NB #2, metric measurements are correct, Imperial are approximate, but this whole recipe was pretty vague from start to finish, so wing it.
That's what I did. For instance, preserved lemon is Moroccan not Indian, yet it worked just fine.
Lemon and lime lentil curry
Ingredients
1 tablespoon ghee or coconut oil (I used a 50-50 combination)
2 onions peeled and chopped fine
2 tablespoon hot curry powder
1 tablespoon mild curry powder (or 1 hot / 2 mild if preferred)
6 cloves of garlic peeled and chopped fine
2 400g / 14oz tins chopped tomatoes in juice
1 400g / 14oz tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed
250 g / 1 cup red lentils
250 g / 1 cup each of red, green, and yellow peppers, sliced and coarsely chopped (optional; we had them in the freezer)
2 heaped tablespoons lime pickle, chopped fine (hot or mild as preferred; Patak brand is good. I used home-made hot)
2 heaped tablespoons preserved lemon, chopped fine (again, I used home-made) *
1 tablespoon garam masala
* If you can't source preserved lemons, use the zest and juice of at least one fresh lemon (two might be better). If you've only got bottled lemon juice, add 125ml / 1/2 cup of it when the tomatoes go in.
Method
Heat your preferred cooking fat in a pan (a wok is even better), add the chopped onions, and cook until soft and translucent. If desired, cook until starting to brown (this may take up to 45 minutes).
Push the onions to one side, allow the fat to flow into the centre of the pan, add the dry spices, combine well with the fat and cook for about five minutes.
Add the garlic and cook for a further five minutes.
Add the kidney beans and lentils to this mixture, stir well, add the peppers, lime pickle and preserved lemon, and stir again.
Add the chopped tomatoes, and one tomato-tin full of water. (Also add the lemon juice (and zest), if that's what you're using instead of preserved lemons.)
Stir well, turn the heat right down, cover, and simmer for about 30 to 45 minutes. (This is where I'd have added 2 cubed chicken breasts, if I'd had them).
Check occasionally to ensure nothing is sticking, adding a little water if required. Taste during this process, and adjust the seasoning. (Which means, if you're using fresh lemon or bottled lemon juice, this is when to add some salt.)
When the lentils are done (I like them a little al dente), sprinkle on 1 tablespoon garam masala, stir it in then serve.
Accompany with Basmati rice, or chapatis (flour tortillas / wraps will do just fine), or naan bread, or any combination of these. I did a mix of 1/3 brown Basmati / 2/3 white Basmati.
@dduane pointed out that what with the carbs, protein, dietary fibre etc., this is also quite healthy. That's an unexpected bonus for something I just thought was no trouble to make, tasted good...
And didn't involve committing even a minor felony, though a slice of apple tort to follow would have been nice... :->

Apple Meatloaf instead of birthday cake!

(Not pictured are the two loafs in bread pans already in the oven. I used just over 5lbs of meat! That's a lot of loaf)
Didn't think to take photos as I went but this is the recipe I modified
2 ½ pounds 80% lean ground beef
1 ½ cups prepared stuffing mix (Pepperidge Farm Herb Stuffing preferred)
2 peeled and finely chopped apples – about 2 cups (Granny Smith Apples)
3 eggs – lightly beaten
2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 large onion minced
3 tablespoons prepared horseradish
¾ cup ketchup
Salt (about 2 teaspoons) & freshly ground pepper to taste
Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix the finely chopped onion, finely chopped peeled apples, stuffing mix, eggs, mustard, horseradish, ketchup, salt and pepper in a large bowl.
Stir to thoroughly combine all ingredients BEFORE adding the meat. Add 2 ½ pounds of 80% lean ground beef and using your hands, mix thoroughly until all of the ingredients have combined with the meat.
Prepare a broiler tray by pouring 1 cup of water in the bottom and spraying the top with nonstick spray. Form the meatloaf on the top of the broiler pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 70-75 minutes until a meat thermometer reads 160 degrees.

The changes I made follow
Combination of pork and beef
Substituted gluten free rolled oats for stuffing mixture
Used a mixture of granny Smith, honey crisp, and pink lady apples
Added a paste of sautéed mushrooms, garlic, shallots, fresh thyme, and fresh rosemary (to help act as a binder as well as seasoning)
Added fresh parsley
For the rolled oats I pulsed them in a food process6 first to break them up a bit and then soaked them in the eggs and a little milk (i just used the last of the jug but it was probably around half a cup for the doubled recipe). Basically you want the oats to form a paste once they've hydrated to prevent them from soaking up too much of the meatloaf's moisture and drying it out.
The mushrooms et al also got processed but into a nice paste rather than just diced. I add this mixture (with varying seasoning ingredients depending on what I'm making) to a lot of my ground meat dishes, like meatloaf, meatballs, or hamburgers. In addition to acting as a binder and flavouring agent it also helps add moisture to the end product.

Nettles! You'll find them in moist soil, so I see them mostly at the bottoms of ditches next to creeks, in forests with really nice soil, etc. They're also a really good source of calcium (1 cup / 89g is 33% of the DV) & vitamin K (1c is 370% of the DV!) Use gloves, scissors, & a basket/tupperware or thick bag to keep from getting stung, & avoid harvesting right next to the road (pollutant contamination :/). Rinse to clean & cook (boil) to remove their sting <3

It had been a week since Amaka got her powers. The one thing she can say about it is actually pretty cool.
She could walk on walls, she didn’t need to use her glasses, she could actually open up jars (Dick tights them way too much), she was able to cut her mile time in half, she was lowkey starting to love the fangs, her reflex came in handy since she was clumsy, she could shoot webs out her hand which allowed her to grab stuff across her bedroom, and she had this six senses thing that told her something bad was going to happen. She called it spider-sense.
This whole thing got her thinking she could make a good hero? A hero Bruce would be proud of? A hero that even Damian would be jealous of?
“What are you thinking about?” A voice said.
She was soon knocked out of her head and back into reality, 1st period AP biology. She had the class with Ram and Francesca ( she picked up that everyone can Francesca Frankie). She became friends with the duo right after the field trip.
She didn’t know if the due considered her friends, she only talked to them during class and waved at them in the hallway. Sometimes she would talk to them after school when Alfred was stuck in traffic.
“Nothing, I’m just tired,” Amaka said. “Didn’t sleep enough.”
“Same thing here. Wait did you hear about this-” Frankie said. It was another thing Amak picked up about Ram and Frankie. Their conversation moved fast.
One of them always changed the topic in less than a second which is confusing sometimes. They also liked to talk when the teacher is talking.
“Ram and Francesca!” Mrs. Rosemary yelled. “You two lunch detention, for talking in class. After multiple warnings.”
They also got in trouble with Mrs. Rosemary a lot.
“Come on Kamila, this is the third time you sent us to lunch detention, this month,” Ram said. “Take it easy.”
“Did you just call me Kamila, you don’t call your teacher by her first name.” Mrs. Rosemary took a long breath. “Ram, meet me outside.”
“He always has to make things worse for himself.” Frankie giggled. “Watch him get another referral”
“Amaka, can you stay after class?” Mrs. Rosemary yelled. “I have something I need to discuss with you.”
“What did you do, Miss Goody two shoes?” Ram asked.
“I don’t know,” she sat there thinking. “Maybe it was the assignment I turned in but it was 30 seconds late.”
“This is why I called you Miss Goody two shoes,” Ram said.
Actually, what did I do? I agree with Ram saying to Miss Goody two shoes because I'm actually an amazing stud-
The bell rang and with that, all the students left including her two friends who ran to the lunch line.
Amaka being asked to stay after class was one of her worst fears. She slowly approached Mrs. Rosemary, hoping for something to happen. Like telling her it was a mistake and she was good to go.
If I’m in trouble, what would Bruce think?
“Amaka, we need to discuss your friends of choice.”
Oh, I’m not in trouble. But discussing my friends seems worse, I guess.
“I don’t want to do this but Ram and Frankie aren’t the best choice for friends.” Rosemary took a deep breath in. “They seem pretty nice kids most of the time but they can be troublemakers. Nothing good will come out of being their friend.”

The girl somehow made it to lunch.
As usual, she had a homemade lunch provided by her favorite butler. A sandwich, orange slices, a bag of sour cream and onion chips, and a small apple juice.
Amaka had the same lunch routine, make her way to the door to the library, then she would sit down and eat her sandwich first, then would start doing any homework she had, eat her orange slices, then drink her juice, lastly, she spent the last 10 minutes of lunch going to the bathroom than using her phone.
But it was different today. She spent most of the lunch thinking about what her teacher said about her friends. Not talking to Ram and Frankie would mean she would have no one to talk to. They were literally the only people she talked to even if it was just for one period. Amaka decided it was a good time just to relax and bite and stop thinking about her friends.
She decided to pick up her sandwich, and the moment she took a bite out of her sandwich, her brother appeared.
Damian Wanye, the blood son.
It was four words she could use to describe the boy: smart, arrogant, rude, and violent.
Emphasize the violet part. She was pretty sure the boys got into at least 3 fights on school grounds this year and they haven't even finished the first semester. Amaka didn’t know if she should pretend not to notice him or give him a small wave. He was with his friends.
He is my brother, I should try to be polite.
So the girl summoned all her strength to wave at him.
He saw me and continued walking.
He made eye contact with me and continued walking.
He continued walking.
He is her brother but he didn’t stop but continued walking.
He won’t give me the time of daylight but gives it to his fake friends who only talk to him because of the fact Bruce is his dad.
She didn’t even realize that tears started to come out and made her sandwich wet.
Notes: Low key, not the best chapter I wrote but not the best, sorry guys. Amaka had her power for a week so that means 2 more weeks until we get to her hero phase properly in a few more chapters.
